Four paintings worth app. 163 million dollars were stolen today in the middle of the day. Three armed robbers in ski masks entered the Museum in Zurich, Switzerland. So at the and of the day we have four new pieces on the luxury art market. This was after all one of the biggest art robberies in Europe’s history.
The four stolen art pieces are:
- Poppy field at Vetheuil (Claude Monet)
- Ludovic Lepic and his Daughter (Edgar Degas)
- Blooming Chestnut Branches (Vincent van Gogh)
- Boy in the Red Waistcoat (Paul Cezanne)
Who will buy them?
Who ordered them?
On who’s wall will they live?
Perhaps they are Valentine’s gifts? ;)
Some say it will be extremely hard to sell them … But on the other hand FBI estimates the market for stolen art at $6 billion annually, and Interpol has about 30,000 pieces of stolen art in its database. And if there is a market then there is a BUYER and a seller. Such famous pieces probably wouldn’t be stolen if they weren’t ordered in the first place. It’s simply to risky to steal so big and not be able to enjoy the fruits.
